Our kitchen has a lot of straight lines.
It’s got stainless steel appliances.
It has a cold white tile floor.
It needed something to, well, give it that touch of country whimsy that works so well in farmhouse kitchens.
As soon as I saw this fabric on the website One Kings Lane, I fell in love with it and decided it had to have a place in my kitchen somewhere.
I went ahead and ordered it without knowing exactly how it was going to work (and without even examining it– all sight unseen, which is pretty scary for fabric!) but it was on sale and I figured worst case I could use it in another room sometime later in life.
Once it arrived, I knew exactly where I wanted to use it: curtains in lieu of cabinet doors under the kitchen sink and under the countertop by the window, also known as “skirts.”
In this article by interior designer Erika Ward, my exact goal was put into words: “A billowy linen adds warmth against a cold farmhouse sink. Using skirts in lieu of cabinetry also aids in creating a farmhouse look in your kitchen.” Tada! Here’s a great example of the warmth and character a sink skirt can provide to a kitchen.
I measured the two areas that needed the skirts– 14 by 18 inches for each panel under the sink and 18 by 27.5 inches for each panel under the countertop by the window– and determined I had plenty of fabric, but then I ran into my next problem: I don’t have a sewing machine. Oh and I don’t know how to sew.
Just as I started to freak out about hiring a professional seamstress to sew these for me (and the assumed high cost that would entail), my friend Heidi stepped in, to the rescue! She’s an excellent sewer (I guess that’s the word for someone who sews?… she’s definitely not an underground conduit for carrying off drainage water) and she offered to make them for me, no problem!
Heidi did an AMAZING, amazing job. She sewed 4 curtain panels (two for each place) and even sewed in a hem wide enough to let a curtain rod through.
I picked up some simple tension curtain rods:

And suddenly, the entire kitchen has a new vibe!
HUGE thanks to Heidi for making such great curtains for the kitchen! She’s amazing!
